Barcelona, june 25, 2015: Giulio at Camp Nou

January 2013: that’s when they told me I needed to go through a fifth knee surgery (this time the right knee)

The thought of going through another surgery and spending long hours in more rehab and therapy made me seriously think, for the first time, that perhaps it was time for me to quit playing soccer…

Nevertheless, at that point in time, the year 2015 seemed so far away that I kept telling myself that something would have happened that would have changed my mind.
But then I started talking about it with my closest friends and that’s when I had the idea of a farewell game…but it had to be something special, something that I had never done before (nor I would have done again)

And when I asked a friend in Barcelona if he thought it was possible to rent the Camp Nou for private event and he said yes, the idea began to take shape becoming a real plan.

But why Barcelona? Barca to me is synonym of real football playing, and also represents the type of organization that I would have liked to see in our Italian Clubs…

Thus, everything started: on September 2014 the first site inspection, the organization, the details, the teams (including the difficult decisions of who to invite and who not), the preparation and the hard training (and a couple more serious injuries), the long wait and finally….June 25th!

I had not actually realized the magnitude of the event until the very final hour before the start when I arrived, 15 minutes late as usual, at the entrance of the stadium together with Giorgia and my little girls and I saw the long queue of people waiting for me at the entrance…and I asked myself: are they all here for me????
And the rest is history…
Thank you for being there and for all the unforgettable memories.
